Do you remember what our lives were like before him? We were sleeping on the streets. Roberto was an assassin. A criminal. He made us traitors. Don’t you understand? Who gives a damn? It’s not important. If it weren’t for him… we’d be rotting in that prison or dead. He saved us. And you killed him. (Alias, "The Orphan")
#aliasedit#alias#nadia santos#julian sark#userthing#irina derevko#roberto fox#cesar martinez#irina x sark#nadia x roberto#nadia x sark#isplus#nsplus#myedit#cesar's way of thinking = sark's way of thinking#WHO. GIVES. A. DAMN. IT'S NOT IMPORTANT. HE SAVED US.#and i do believe that sark is even worse about this.#he isn't just grateful for what irina did to him; he thinks it's the best thing that ever happened to him.#(and his life before irina? it doesn't exist to him)#it's interesting to think about how differently he sees irina and his father. how he recognizes his father's abuse for what it was;#doesn't have a problem with holding him accountable but isn't capable of doing the same with irina.#for him to believe that he owes everything to irina; to believe that he would be nothing without her;#the circumstances of their first meeting had to be awful. he had to be at his most vulnerable.#(like it doesn't matter what irina did to him; what matters to him is what would have happened to him if they hadn't met.#and that in his mind overshadows everything else.)#what i also love about that scene from the orphan is how it's not just nadia and cesar talking in it. or nadia and sark talking.#it's also sark and allison talking. and with sark and allison the lines become more blurred.#it becomes less about one person saying 'what we're doing is wrong' and more about one of them (allison) trying to make the other#look at irina differently. sark doesn't have enough distance from irina to see her for who she really is. but allison does.#and i love the idea of her trying to make him see that it doesn't matter what irina promised him; he will still end up like the others.

@febuwhump day 12 who are you
the world minus one
summary
“Who the hell are you?”
“Agent Woo,” he says.
“Ha,” says Peter. He grins. “That rhymed.”
“I’ve been assigned to oversee your home detainment,” he tells him, flashing his card as if he were a magician, and they were at a magic show, instead of the most boring place on planet earth
OR
Agent Jimmy Woo is assigned to oversee Peter's house arrest post far from home, and Peter's eyes see probation officer but his brain screams FRIEND.
Peter considers chopping his foot off.
Did he really need two feet? Maybe Mr. Stark could fashion him a prosthetic like he did for his own Infinity Gauntlet damaged arm, or maybe Peter could spend one of his annoyingly long days trapped inside this apartment figuring out how to do it himself.
He’s exiled to a much larger apartment than the one he and May share in Queens, but somehow, it still manages to be cramped and suffocating, as if the air there was thick and might smother him before the boredom drove him up the walls.
That is if his ankle monitor doesn’t choke the life out of him first.
He pulls at it, itching at it from his place sitting in the middle of the living room floor, when the doorbell rings and Peter stops, he frowns. Mr. Stark isn’t expected to visit him today, and May isn’t due for dinner until a couple of hours.
With a sigh, he stands and walks across his apartment. He opens the door to an unfamiliar face wearing a familiar and unwelcome FBI jacket.
“Who the hell are you?”
“Agent Woo,” he says.
“Ha,” says Peter. He grins. “That rhymed.”
“I’ve been assigned to oversee your home detainment,” he tells him, flashing his card as if he were a magician, and they were at a magic show, instead of the most boring place on planet earth.
It’s an awkward moment. Him just standing there, in the hall, and Peter basks in his ability to make a Fed sweat.
“Aren’t you going to invite me in?”
“Are you a vampire?”
“...I’m sorry?”
“Vampires,” sighes Peter. “They have to be let in. Feds usually don’t wait for an invitation. Not used to one having manners.”
Peter walks away from the door, leaving it open, and hoping that’s enough of an invitation. It isn’t like he has a choice anyway.
Agent Woo shuts the door behind him, and something stabs at Peter. He’s being rude. His aunt taught him better than that, and there’s something about Agent Woo that Peter decides he likes. The magic trick, maybe.
Peter offers him coffee. Agent Woo looks over at the kitchen, which is admittedly a disaster zone, and politely declines.
“So, what’s your job?” asks Peter. He clears a space off of the dining room table for them to both sit down. “Making sure I’m not staging an escape attempt?”
“Basically, I’ll be dropping by from time to time, to ensure you’re behaving yourself,” says Agent Woo. “Tony Stark did bribe me to harass you about your online classes and that’s not typically part of my job description, I need the money for my children’s college -”
“-you have kids?”
“Not yet, but I plan to, and with the way the economy is-” Agent Woo pauses. “We’re really supposed to be talking about you.”
“I’m behaving myself,” says Peter. “I’m attending my online classes, and I’ve got no plans to take up a new identity and flee the country. Now back to you. Anyone special you’re planning on having these kids with? I need all the details.”
It’s true. He does.
There isn’t much entertainment in his life what with being locked up in an apartment, spending most of his days alone. It’s for May’s safety that they aren’t able to live together during his house arrest, during the massively long stretch of time before his trial, but that doesn’t mean Peter likes it.
Agent Woo spills something about a doctor before pausing a second time and getting back on track. He recites the same information Peter’s heard before. It’s really boring and a waste of time, but Peter supposes he’s got lots of it to waste, anyway.
“Any questions for me?” Agent Woo asks, once he’s finished with his spiel.
“Can you show me how to do that magic trick?”
“Maybe another time,” he tells him, then looks around. “You know, a lot of people in your situation find it helps to form a routine and create a clean living space. Waking up in the morning, showering, putting on normal clothes.”
Peter frowns at the sudden callout. “Who says pajamas aren’t normal?”
“Just offering some friendly advice.”
He stands, and heads for the door, telling him he’ll be by in a couple of weeks, when Peter feels the throbbing near his ankle.
“Agent Woo,” says Peter, before he gets to the door. “You wouldn’t, um, know how to loosen the ankle monitor? I may have been what Mr. Stark fondly refers to as tactless with the agent who put it on and they may have retaliated just a little bit.”
So, Agent Woo loosens the ankle monitor, and Peter, once he’s alone in the apartment, collapses on his couch and decides that he and Agent Woo are going to be friends, despite the unsolicited advice.
*
Peter’s prepared the next time Agent Woo visits.
Coffee is going, the apartment is clean, and he’s got five packs of playing cards laid out on the kitchen table. It had been a lot of whining on his part to convince Mr. Stark to drop everything and run to the store and buy them, but this is an emergency. A magic emergency.
He’s also ordered a pizza, and it arrives just as Agent Woo starts his regular round of checkup, interrogation questions.
“Oh, that’s the pizza,” says Peter, when the doorbell rings.
Agent Woo opens his mouth as Peter leaps up from his chair, but ultimately doesn’t say anything. Once Peter’s back to the kitchen table, he opens the box and lets the aroma fill the apartment.
“Want a slice?”
“That would be crossing professional bounds…” says Agent Woo. His voice trailed off. He stared at the pizza. “But that pizza looks really good, and I haven’t had lunch…”
Peter pushes the box closer to the FBI agent. Agent Woo grabs a slice, and official talk about Peter’s detainment falls to the wayside.
“Tell me about the doctor,” says Peter. “Is she pretty?”
Agent Woo obliges, and Peter begins to understand why Woo’s crushing on her so hard. She sounds kickass. And Peter’s rooting for them.
“You gotta ask her out, man,” says Peter. A string of melt cheese hangs off his mouth and swipes it away. “I mean, Agent Woo.”
The agent laughs, and by the time he leaves, Peter knows how to do the magic trick and almost no time was spent talking about his upcoming trial or the conditions of his house arrest.
*
Peter bleeds out on his living room floor.
He hadn’t meant to get stabbed. He hadn’t even meant to step out of his apartment, but it’s getting to him. The confinement. The crime happening below his apartment and he’s expected to sit by and let happen.
Mr. Stark is going to kill him, and he wouldn’t have called him if not for the pain, the unbearable pain of his skin stitching itself back together. Superpowered healing doesn’t come without it’s trauma.
To make matters worse, his doorbell rings, and he isn’t expecting anyone, so he knows it’s Agent Woo.
He inhales deep. He tries freeing his face from displaying the terrifying agony he’s experiencing in his leg, and he limps over to answer the door.
Agent Woo isn’t fooled. “Jesus Christ, is that blood?”
“Is that Delmar’s?” Peter momentarily forgets his situation when he spots the brown bag in Agent Woo’s hand, and when he smells the unforgetful aroma of Delmar’s Deli.
“Forget the sandwiches,” says Agent Woo. He walks into the apartment, helps Peter back to the couch, and places the bag on the coffee table. “What happened to you?”
“Don’t freak out,” he tells him. “I accidentally stabbed myself with a steak knife.”
Agent Woo stands, crosses his arms. “I’m supposed to believe you did that to yourself? On accident?”
“To be fair,” says Peter. “You’ve known me long enough to know that’s also extremely probable.”
“How could you do this,” says Agent Woo. He isn’t angry. His voice sounds the same as Mr. Sark’s had on the phone. Worried. Afraid for him, and what’s done, putting his own privilege of pretrial house arrest on the line for a few minutes fighting petty criminals. “You know what’s at stake if you break the rules.”
“I know,” says Peter, softly. “I’m sorry.”
“We need to put pressure on that.”
Agent Woo disappears from his sight and returns with a towel he carefully ties around Peter’s leg wound.
“Are you sure you don’t need a hospital?”
Peter shakes his head. “Spider healing will work it’s magic.”
He closes his eyes and tries to block out the pain, and when that doesn’t work, he decides a distraction is what he needs.
“Tell me about Dr. Lewis,” he says, through a grimace. “Have you asked her out yet?”
Agent Woo sits on the couch next to him. “Not yet.”
“You gotta get on that,” says Peter. “Before someone else does.”
“I don’t know about that, Pete,” he tells him. “I don’t know if someone like her would say yes to someone like me.”
“Someone like you? Someone who’s a nice person? And likes all the same cheesy sit-coms as her?” asks Peter. “Dude, you two are perfect for each other. You’re gonna ask her, and she’s going to say something like geez, finally, I was waiting for you to get a clue, and then you’ll have little Dr. Lewis-Woos running around all over the place.” He stops, the pain stabs, and he keeps going. “She’d be lucky.”
“Thanks, Peter.”
“Anytime,” says Peter, his voice cracking. The edges of his vision blur, but he’s able to focus on the brown bag on the coffee table. “You really brought me Delmar’s?”
“Last time I was here you said how much you missed it.”
“Make a habit of doing favors for murders? Fun.”
The pain’s making him more bitter, more honest, more angsty about the fact that the entire world thinks he’s killed that clown Mysterio. Maybe that’s what his temporary escape is really about. Trying to prove that he’s good. That he’s against the crimes people say he’s committed.
“I know you’re not a murderer.”
The entire world minus one, he guesses, along with his friends and family.
“You believe me?”
“I’ve dealt with killers before,” says Agent Woo. “You’re not one of them.”
Peter feels lighter, better even in his leg, by the idea of someone like Agent Woo believing his innocence. Gives him hope maybe his house arrest will end with freedom instead of prison, like Mr. Stark has been telling him from the start.
His good feeling doesn’t last long, though, because Mr. Stark barges through the door and Peter’s spidey senses know he’s about to get a lecture.
“How could you be so stupid?”
“Mr. Stark -”
“-No,” says Mr. Stark. “No excuses. I’ve warned you over and over again. Where is it?”
Peter pulls the device he’d built to interfere with the ankle monitor out from his pocket, and hands it over to Mr. Stark, who breaks it.
“For a genius,” says Agent Woo, as he eyes the broken parts of the interference device. “You really lack common sense.”
Mr. Stark turns his attention to Agent Woo. “Look, Agent -”
“-I’m off duty,” says Agent Woo, standing up from the couch. “Just a guy bringing some sandwiches, and I’ve really got no reason to believe he didn’t slip and fall, uh, on a kitchen knife. Just… never again.”
Peter nods his head. “Okay, yeah, never again.”
Agent Woo leaves them, Mr. Stark softens and gives him his extra strength pain relievers, and Peter drifts off, but not before devouring the sandwiches he loves and dwelling on the tiny spark of hope Agent Woo offered to him.
Not everyone believes he's a murderer, and for that moment, it’s enough.

rewatching decadence part 2 because part 1 got too long
ep7: Getting to see the game Deca-Dence as a new player would with the opening cutscene, skipping the TOS, character creation and all was a good touch. Also the fact that Kaburagi could look like anything, but he wants to look like mid 40′s dad both times. I wonder who it was that decided Minato should vape. The conversation on the top of Deca-Dence is real interesting because its like only 20% of the actual conversation is spoken out loud and the other 80% left unsaid, so we have to guess what was left unsaid. Minato tells Kaburagi to not make things worse for himself, condoning his actions, but also vows to himself to help Kabu even though it is very dangerous for him. Kaburagi leaves after regretfully saying he doesn’t want to cause Minato more trouble, and yet his current and future actions are and will be doing just that. The obscuring fog in this scene adds to the sense of distance or disconnect between these two. Somewhere over the past 7 years they have fallen off the same page.
This episode again highlights how while for the Tankers this is life and death situation, for the cyborgs Deca-Dence is a game. We get a shot of some Gears lightheartedly discussing how fun the latest game event was, followed right after with what that event meant for the Tankers as we see a makeshift medbay in the streets filled with the dead and dying to really drive home the gap of compassion between the two groups. Minato is one of the few cyborgs we really see besides Kaburagi and the show uses him to show how cyborgs don’t think of humans as people. Humans to the cyborgs are just npcs in a game. Now anime and manga about videogames have been around a long time and were especially popular in the mid 2000s (mmorpgs especially) after which the genre dropped the “in a game” part but kept everything else which were today know as the isekai genre. Hot takes like “the videogame characters are actually people all along” aren’t new either, but Deca-Dence is one of the most successful in generating sympathy and compassion for the Other by flipping the script. Most of those series come from the perspective of the player and show the player coming to care about the npcs. This often isn’t done very well or comes off as patronizing, like the other characters act in service of making the mc look like a good guy instead of actually acting like fully realized people in their own right. (*cough* sao *cough*). In contrast to this, Deca-Dence initially starts from the perspective of Natsume who is human just like us the audience, and thus predisposing us to feeling with and feeling for her. So later when its revealed the humans of this world aren’t seen as people by the cyborgs or the the corporation that rules all their lives, it is granted greater weight in the context of all of us who have played videogames before and met npcs and maybe not cared all that much about them. Decadence places the viewer in the position of the npc, the Other.
Episode 7 is also the beginning of several letters exchanged between Kaburagi and Natsume. Its a presence that lingers long after the person has left and also acts as a contrast to the call/social networking apps of the cyborgs. In episode 5 we saw Kaburagi choose Natsume over following the orders of Solid Quake, but through to episode 7 he still believed in its system. Look even at episode 6 where he still believed that if he worked hard and played by the rules, the system would reward him and everything would be ok and compare that calm assurance in episode 6 to his mountain frustration in episode 7. He’s starting to see how thing are run in Deca-Dence makes life really hard and kind of terrible for the Tankers. This frustration at the system culminates at the end of the episode when he realizes the real human cost of perpetuating this system of oppression in how it hurts Natsume. I mean “Late stage capitalism made my adopted daughter Natsume cry, so I'm going to dismantle it.“ is a joke and pretty funny, but like, that’s what actually what happens. Both Kaburagi and Natsume further the theme of pushing the limits. Kaburagi realizes the limits of his society and why its time to break them down, while of Natsume’s side we see her struggle in the face of things much larger than her. Much like how the cyborgs are stuck in their lifestyles of working for Solid Quake, earning oxyone, and playing Deca-Dence, the Tankers are stuck in their role in society to leave their fates to the Gears and Deca-Dence. So Natsume asking everyone to take charge of their own lives and close that the hole is them stepping out of the comfort of what they’ve always done, which is leave it to someone else (deca-dence administration, gears, etc.). Natsume asks the Tankers to push their limits, the step outside of what they’ve always done and to believe in things they thought were impossible to do. We see Fei representing the belief a lot of Tankers that nothing needs to change, thus nothing should change and they will not act to bring change to their own lives. The Tankers live lives that are decided for them. The Deca-Dence administration controls their population, and the system eliminates any who would disrupt it. They don’t have a lot of control and are resigned to live like that, until Natsume comes along. This episode we see her do what she does the entire series, inspire people to be more. Natsume’s doing alright, she might not be where she wants to be but she’s taken steps in that direction. Where Nstsume is psychologically contrast Kaburagi who’s a bit of a mess realizing he can no longer live under the thumb of Solid Quake’s Deca-Dence system and is kind of floundering about. When kaburagi meets Natsume again... he is so awkward, I’m getting second hand embarressmen. and again the assault jokes have got to stop. The shot of the empty chair calls back to the first episode and another talk between Natsume and Kaburagi. I always love it when an anime plays the credits early.
ep8: again the importance of the individual over the group with kaburagi’s lines at the beginning on why he’s taking down the gadoll factory. I’m just thinking about how kaburagi is certain minato kept his avatar. and everyone just agreeing that minato has that vibe. I really love the avatar retrieval part of the first episode. Its a heist sequence. I love heists!. They also did a good job with pacing and tension in that part. Still can’t believe the creators put a sex toy in this show but at least this joke is actually funny. Oh Minato pulled strings to get Kaburagi out of the poor jail. I missed that part. but now the two of them are not only on different pages, but on different books. Minato doesn’t see the tankers as people and follows the Deca-Dence system on what is good and what is bad, so he can’t comprehend why Kaburagi is throwing away everything the Deca-Dence system values for something the system has deems less than worthless. While Kaburagi has formed a moral compass independent of this system, he sucks at communication and doesn’t explain anything to Minato. Interesting how Minato views bugs as bad but has made an exception for kaburagi and probably did some mental gymnastics to do so. It reminds of those homophobic family members that make an exception for their gay family member. Minato never wanted anything but to be by Kaburagi’s side so he prioritizes Kaburagi above pretty much everything else which is why while he defends the establishment, he also breaks rules for Kaburagi. Their little convo continues the same dialectic, Kaburagi’s been inspired by Natsume to push the limits of himself and society, to choose how he lives instead of letting the Deca-Dence system tell him. Kaburagi underwent character development when Minato wasn’t looking and he can’t recognize him anymore but desperately wants to. Kaburagi moving forwards without him and him realizing that he was never as much a priority to Kaburagi as Kaburagi was to him, means that Minato’s really hurting by the end of the scene, and he doesn’t take it out on Kaburagi, he just leaves. ...if it isn’t obvious by now, minato is my favorite character. gotta love the gay robot having a mid life crisis. (i mean his feeling aren;t necessarily romantic, but you know the joke I’m referencing). Turkey just wakes up and chooses evil every day huh. I predict someone on tumblr with a history of unhealthy relationships is horny for turkey.
ep9: why does the reactor look like a cyborg core? Again. WHYYY does Donatello have a gun??? idiots let him keep a working gun. I love the contrast of the actual pretty gritty situation of the prison riot being represented with super cartoony slapstick animations. This probably saves on frames as well as keep the series from getting too dark, because if you think about it the labor camp conditions are pretty horrifying but its disguised with cartoony designs and wacky characters. Kaburagi and Natsume are doing very important plot things, but the core of episode 9 are Sark and Turkey. Through them we see the same conversation that has been repeated through out the series of conforming to society and staying in line, that things won’t ever change so you should just duck your head and follow order, or the “I’m comfortable how things are” versus you should make your own choices with live life how to want to, to push your limits. Turkey sees the Deca-Dence system as absolute and eternal and thus tries to play by the system and help it continue by selling out everyone else. Sark is passive and doesn't really have an opinion of his own, just following whatever the others are doing whether its Kaburagi stealing his avatar or Turkey in betraying everyone. Sark unlike Turkey isn’t malicious, he wants the best for everyone but also isn’t quite willing to put himself at risk for others. After seeing everyone be destroyed as a consequence of following Turkey however, his new resolve and subsequent suicide bombing is the only reason the plan ends up succeeding. For total destruction of the gadoll factory two things were needed: flipping the kill switch on all the gadoll in the dome, and destroying the reactor powering the factory. We aren’t told how Jill and Kaburagi originally planned to destroy the reactor (like was he just suppose to wander around until they bumped into it?), but Sark’s explosion is what allowed Kaburagi and Natsume to get away from Hugin. Without Sark, Hugin would have totally caught them. So it was Sark taking charge of his own life and pushing his limits that saved them all. That said, if the explosion was powerful enough to reach all the way up the giant tube and destroy the reactor, why didn’t it break the tube and why didn’t it destroy everyone left in the prison? ah well it makes thematic sense so I’ll let this pass.
So I’ve talked before about how Deca-Dence’s ending could be improved to build on some of the themes established in the first couple episodes. The problem is that this show isn’t pushing a narrative of collaboration and the power of collective bargaining, its pushing an individualist narrative about how each and every person can reach out and better themself. Now I don’t think these two themes are mutually exclusive, but it would take a very delicate touch as well as an attentive and thoughtful audience to successfully weave these two theme together into a nuanced whole. And if a rewrite were to happen with the minimal amount of changes, I think ep 10 is a good divergence point. The final little arc is about the rogue gadoll outside of the Deca-Dence system and the threat of total annihilation by solid quake, and while big kaiju fights look cool, they don’t quite deal with dismantling systems of oppression at the hands of your corporate overlords. So, I would have preferred something like the cyborgs and Tankers coming together to seize the means of production, destroy Solid Quake, and take its assets for themselves. The ideal rewrite situation though would for this all to be 24 episodes and the big gadoll to be the episode 12 climax while taking down Solid Quake happen in ep 23-24. And since we’re doing a rewrite, Natsume kinda drops off as the main character after episode 5 and I’d like to see her back at the forefront of the show.
ep10: If this show had leaned more into the futility of Natsume seeking to improve herself within a system that rendered it meaningless, it would have ended up much darker, but I also think it would have been richer. Ah poor Natsume, she’s at a low point since the context of what she has been doing has wildly changed, afterall, what’s the point of improving yourself if nothing else ever changes and what you do doesn’t matter. The letter writing continues and it is good. So I’m not going to question how the exit tunnel is still intact, but watching into robot kaburagi angrily drive a car and swear is really funny. I’ve been wondering for a while, the humans literally live in a fuel tank, how is there enough light to grow plants in there? Like as part of the post-apocalyptic aesthetic, a lot of Tankers have little house plants which in addition to being inside the fuel tank, are also inside their houses. oh yeah for any who didn’t get it. The reason as a child Natsume went into cardiac arrest and her chip was read as dead wasn’t because of the severity of her injuries, Deca-Dence’s system had deemed her too dangerous to live and flipped her kill switch.
ep11: on a thematic level I might be meh, but the writing and execution are what really pull the ending through. Everything is nicely set up from the mutated gadoll the victim of animal abuse several episodes earlier to fighting hugin in the factory being how hugin finds out about natsume. I think about Jill’s lines here, that no matter how hard you try to keep things from changing, you’re just fighting the inevitable. Also Natsume took Kaburagi’s switching bodies really well like seeing someone you care about die in front of you but then surprise they just got another body would give most people such whiplash. “our bodies are under the system’s control, but our core’s are independent of it” I’m still thinking about this. It makes sense given how the first generation of cyborgs where humans with mechanical implants, but cyborg’s cores are still such a mystery. The things you can’t control are a part of life too. In Deca-Dence bugs are uncertainties that the master control system doesn’t know what to do with. More than just individualism good, here we get a little more nuance to Deca-Dence (the show)’s theme. Jill was one of the creators of the Deca-Dence game (giant mech, control system, and all), and they tried to create perfect system where everything was under its control and order could be maintained forever, and this inevitably failed (the show tells us). Trying to perfectly order everything is to attempt the impossible, disorder will always creep in and those little individual differences should be celebrated. and is to the backdrop of an old Deca-Denca(robot) part that is rusting away, plants and animals overtaking it much like how the Deca-Dence’s currently enforced status quo of the game will fall away in the face of those it deems bugs. wait did we ever figure out what the bug was that jill left in deca-dence? mmmm I’m still thinking about Minato logging out because the system told him to but unwilling to let things end this way so physically going back down to earth in his real body. Facing the possibility of truly losing Kaburagi forever is what pushes Minato to question following the Deca-Dence master control system. He totally became a bug for Kaburagi. I doubt Kaburagi had any idea how much Minato wanted to hear the words “let’s fight together to the end”, but offered the thing he truly desires, Minato probably would have done anything. mmm he’s got it bad. there’s also that linking Kaburagi and Deca-Dence’s core takes two people and yet, Kaburagi didn’t bring anyone with him. Which is terrible planning, but allowed for this really great scene. that he knew Minato would come after him. And then the last thing me sees in Minato. Minato truly is ride or die. literally. He could have gone back to the spaceship so that he’d survive no matter what, but he choose to stay. If the plan succeeds then he will see it through with/right beside/literally inside of Kaburagi, and if it fails and Kaburagi is annihilated when Solid Quake wipes the dome, Minato will also be annihilated along side Kaburagi.
ep12: so kaburagi just straight up demands admin privileges and the governing sys is like “sure”. Yeah pretty sure the governing system convo was a season 2 hook to show the big wigs. The independent all governing system tells Kaburagi that all this, him and bugs are a part of the system’s learning process, to which Kaburagi responds that all that doesn’t matter since he’s going to do what he wants independent/regardless of the governing system. the context in which you do things doesn’t matter. Also I never pointed it out since its like the 4th wall of scifi, everyone is just trained to suspend their disbelief, but oxyone is total bullshit. A non toxic liquid energy dense fuel that can be concentrated into orbit range lasers. The tankers all helping Natsume push the spare part is a feel good moment seeing everyone working together. Its an unnecessarily scene for the purpose of including the tankers in the action, since the part wasn’t ever really needed and the writers didn’t have to have it severed by the laser to begin with. the Natsume montage overlayed with the music is very good. wait. i just realized, limiter release can be reversed. Afterall, Kaburagi released his limiters with his first avatar, and if he had still been fully connected to it when hugin killed that avatar, cyborg Kaburagi should have died too but he didn’t and just immediately logged in on a different account. Kabu-Dence releasing his limits here and literally giving all of himself to destroy omega is fulfilling both for his character arc and on an emotional level. This entire show has been about pushing one’s limits and making your own choices, and it culminates here’s in Kaburagi literally releasing his limiter, thus putting him in mortal danger, and then giving every last ounce of himself to the path he has decided. The destruction of the mech fortress Deca-Dence is also symbolic of the end of the game of the Deca-Dence mmorpg as we know it. wait wait did Kaburagi hold on just long enough to hear Natsume thank him. aaaaahhh and then the ed song plays!! and then the play the new mmo intro scene. Still real weird that they’re using a cyborg brain as a ball.

Underneath The Elder Tree
Chapter One /  Chapter Two
And for easy reading here’s the Ao3 ( X ) But I still haven’t fixed up the last two chapters so those are gonna be messy and maybe not make much sense because of some changes I’ve made in the earlier parts of the story (I mean this chapter is probably trash too but here we go).
Chapter Three
Claire dreamt she lay in a cove of trees.
She could feel pine needles pricking the soft skin of her cheeks and tree sap matting her curls with sticky sweet gold and crushed oak leaves that twined around her fingertips. Yet the air around her was warm. Warmer than a woodfire. More enveloping than sunshine. It seemed to sink deep into her weary bones and hollowed heart, branding her like a tender kiss.
And for a moment she forgot who she was. Hoped she'd never have to wander from the haven beneath the trees as she breathed in the earthy musk that filled her lungs, knowing true peace.
But then a noise ripped Claire from her sun-dipped oasis, awakening her with an upright start, and for a span of three heartbeats she knew not where she was. Couldn't remember who had shuttered the windows that rattled from the wind or lit the fire burning slowly to embers before her.
Nor did she remember who’d given her their bed that was big enough to fit a bear, with a quilt that wrapped around her, smelling like the sun, the earth . . .
Of kindness.
Her memory returned to her then. Of the bitter cold and her shaky breath, curled underneath that crooked old tree. And of her confrontation with that stubborn man. Jamie Fraser.
After Claire agreed that she would wait out the storm, she took his hand to stand (embarrassed that she was too weak to do so herself) and nearly toppled onto his chest.
“Sorry,” she began to say, a flustered tint to her cheeks, but Jamie shook his head and bent to pick up the quilt that had fallen, placing it back around her shoulders. Smiling a little when she sighed, grateful for it's warmth.
“There’s no need for ye to be, Sassenach,” he said, taking a tentative hold of her arm, his touch light as moth wings, lest she sway again. “Come, sit yerself back to the chair and I'll fetch ye a bit of bread and broth or maybe -”
He politely looked away, adding - " Would ye like to wash?"
The offer of food and a bath was mighty appealing but another wave of fatigue washed over her. As well as a desperate need to be alone to gather her thoughts.
“I think I'll fall asleep mid-bite and dip if I do.”
She could see him wanting to protest, his eyes passing over the thinness of her face. But he must've felt her limbs growing heavier and seen the extra flutter of her lashes that she hoped conveyed her tiredness, for he sighed and gave his grip on her a light squeeze.
“A'right then, this way, lass.”
Inside his room, she leaned against the wall while watching Jamie light her a fire, bright as morning light. He then pulled from his drawers a clean woolen sark for her to wear but dared not meet her eye as he shyly placed it at the foot of the bed and pointed with his chin at the basin of water beside the window.
No, he was definitely not a wretch, she thought with some amusement.
Before he closed the door, Claire stopped him and very simply and gratefully said, “Thank you.”
Jamie answered with a sweet crooked grin that crinkled his eyes and shrugged.
“Ye needn't thank me, Sassenach. Not ever. Now get yerself to bed.”
Then he wished her goodnight.
Alone now, she moved closer to the fire, shivering again, and felt a mad impulse to throw herself to the flames if only to keep her bones from clattering.
If only to keep herself from thinking about the rain.
Of where exactly she was and how far away she had been carried from where she'd lain.
Feeling a whimper rise unbidden in her throat, Claire carefully pulled her ruined dress up over her head with a sharp intake of breath as her bare mottled flesh met the air. She took stock of her scrapes and bruises, nothing serious she could see. Though when she ran her fingers across her ribs, she found she could play a hollow tune that echoed the one carved in what was left of her heart.
Rubbing her hand across the tears fallen to her cheeks, she quickly dressed and burrowed into bed, tucking her dress beneath the pillow. Except for a sheer embroidered corner that she traced and traced until her eyes drooped.
Her last dimming thought hoped and prayed to have a dreamless night.
She hadn't of course. But it wasn't the nightmare that the rain always plagued her with. This one had been peaceful.
Almost . . . loving. . .
Claire shook her head then left the bed to open the shutters, the light making her squint. She smoothed her hand over the foggy windowpane and saw it was still a miserable gale of wind and rain just as Jamie predicted, and weak as she was, she wouldn't have been able to withstand the weather either.
Stubborn man was right.
She would have gone on berating herself if it weren't for the sweet and eager whisper behind her.
"Claire?"
She turned around and was startled to find Willie at the door and gazing at her from a pair of sparkling dew drop eyes, caught between excitement and wonder, brimming with uncertainty.
"D'ye feel any better?" He loudly whispered, face frowned with concern as he looked her over. She blushed and tightened the neckline of her sark, a loose fit that threatened to slide off her shoulders and pool at her feet.
“I do, thanks to you, sweet lad,” said Claire in the same hushed tone as Willie (blushing at being called sweet) and sat back in bed, a blanket pulled around her. “But why must we whisper?”
Willie plopped down beside her on his knees. Hair unruly as the wind. Honey smudged on his chin.
"Da said no' tae bother ye, that ye'd come out when ye'd wake. So I came tae see if ye had and ye did, so I'm no' a bother. . . Am I?"
Claire couldn't help but smile, feeling a sudden bubble of laughter in her belly at his blather. “A bother you are not, just a surprise you were with such a tender foot even to my hearing."
Willie grinned, big and wide.
"That's what da says. He thinks I'd make a good hunter like him if only I'd quit being sae sweet tae our supper."
And speaking of supper. . . "But there's nay worry for us feedin’ ye,” he assured. “There's food like I promised ye and I can bring ye as much as ye like, whatever ye like. Even if it's greens or the funny drink da likes."
Claire's mouth twitched, guessing what that "funny drink" was.
“You really are gallant as a knight, Willie, and a most thoughtful one too.”
A second wave of heat crept to the tip of Willie's nose and ears as a bashful smile tugged at his mouth.
"Does that mean I have yer favor?"
Claire raised a teasing brow.
"What do you think I am, Sir Knight, a jinn?”
The wee lad shook his head with an awed expression on his face and told her exactly what he'd been imagining that made her fidget where she sat.
He thought her a faerie, maybe born in a flower's bloom.
Or was it a raindrop from heaven come down to earth?
Did she have wings like a flutterby hidden on her back?
Or could she talk to the wee things that lived in the wood like frogs and squirrels and birds? And what of the big beasts, like the bears and wolves?
Willie went on and on without sparing breath and would have carried on but another's voice interrupted the two curly tops.
"I seem to recall ordering a wee gomeral to leave our guest be or he'd be hung by his ankles down the privy hole where my razor currently resides."
At being reminded of the foul stenched threat due to his theft and clumsy fingers (He'd wanted his father's dirk but didn't think he'd miss the razor), Willie jolted to attention, facing his father standing at the doorway.
"Claire was awake, Da! I didna poke her or pinch her any. I just wanted tae see her and I have, and speak to her like I am. D’ye ken she maybe talks to birds?"
Jamie looked at his lad with the most baffled expression and could only nod along.
"Be that as it may, ye still dinna barge into a lasses room - for it's hers until it's not - especially when -" Jamie glanced at Claire , wrapped in the bedding, then quickly away. "did ye even think to let her dress, laddie?"
Willie looked to Claire then back at his father with a quizzical expression.
“But she is dressed, Da.”
Jamie rubbed the bridge of his nose and sighed.
“A’right. Out wi’ ye.”
Willie groaned and hopped off the bed but not before telling Claire to hurry as he skipped out the room, leaving his father behind.
"Shouldn't you follow him? This lass isn't properly dressed." Claire gave Jamie a sharp look seeing his lingering stance.
"I shall,” he said, ears pinking like Willie's. “ Only - I have something for ye to help wi’ that."
It was then she noticed Jamie had something tucked under his arm, a bundle of fabric that he handed to her. She unraveled the folds and held out a simple shirt with sleeves that didn't reach her ankles, some knits and an arisaid that carried the comforting scent of woodsmoke and musk.
"I did a quick stitch to that auld shirt of mine while ye slept. It might still fit ye troublesome but ye'll no' be swallowed by it. And though it's seen better days the arisaid will keep ye warm, better than yer dress, ripped as it is. "
She looked up at him with a touched expression as he stood shyly, hands in the pockets of his trousers.
"My modesty thanks you," she said earnestly. "I never could do much with a needle and thread. My hands are better suited to catching fish  - and don't give me that look that begs to differ or I'll regret ever thanking you."
Jamie couldn't help but chuckle and rubbed the back of his neck.
"Then I'm happy to have pleased ye so. And that ye’re looking fair better than the night had me believe,” he added, with a gentle touch to his voice.
Claire knew what he spoke of, how she may have been as good as dead without him, but instead passed a nervous hand through her curls shooting every which way and said -
“You're far too kind and maybe a little blind. I'm sure I look a great deal worse than you say.”
Then her belly protested that had his mouth turning upward and hers a thin line of warning.
"Och, I'll see to it that we fatten ye to rival any sow this side of the mountain." He winked absurdly like an owl and she would have loved to laugh if he hadn't vexed her.
"On any other day I would take insult to being compared to a pig but I find the idea at the moment to be more than appealing. But just this once."
Jamie grinned wide.
"I shall keep it in mind, Sassenach. Now I'll fetch ye some hot water so ye can fancy yerself up and just maybe Willie will have left something from his lunch for ye.”
That took her aback. “Is it not morning?”
He cocked his head to the window. “We're a few hours shy of evening, lass.”
After Jamie filled the bedside basin with hot steaming water and left, Claire cleaned herself up and dressed, the clothes caressing her in warmth that was so like her dreams. Making a sudden flush bloomed across her face , from hunger Claire was sure, and left the room to reluctantly meet the day.
//
Just as Claire had been promised, the Fraser men had a banquet waiting for her as if they had welcomed into their home a queen.
There was steaming rabbit stew with turnips and onions, a big loaf of bread for dipping, fat oatcakes drizzled generously with honey (by Willie of course) and bits of this and that to fill her belly for days to come.
“You weren't joking about fattening me up were you?” Marveled Claire, as she was ushered wide-eyed into a chair by Willie, who plopped down beside her, raised on his knees.
“Ye’d be growing a wee tail too it were up to the laddie,” chuckled Jamie, as he poured Claire a glass of water from the tables pitcher. “He was asking me if I could find a bear for ye to eat.”
“A bear?” Claire repeated.
”Aye,” said Willie, who took it upon himself to load her plate with food. “But da said what we had would do ye jest fine but not 'cause he's scarrit 'cause da’s not scarrit of anything. Except mebbe a skunk, aye Da?”
Jamie tore a piece of bread in his hands, giving one half to Claire and the other to Willie who's cheeks puffed like a chipmunk with each happy bite.
“I'd rather tussle with a skunk and stink for a year than come face to face wi’ a bear,” he said, and pushed a plate of butter towards Claire, looking a wee bit intimidated at the mountain of food before her. “Now let's leave the lass be so she can eat in peace lest her bread go stale and her stew go cold .”
Willie swallowed the last bit of his bread and frowned, slumping onto his bottom.
“A’right,” he mumbled.
But Claire nudged his arm, offering him a smile.
" I don't mind the company. Better than hearing the rain pelt the roof."
Willie looked up at her with a great bright smile but Jamie shook his head. “Ye asked for it, Sassenach.”
That she did.
In the days that followed where the days were dark as night, Willie's chatter was there to distract Claire from the gloom.
The first day, after she'd eaten, Willie had taken her hand (warm and slightly sticky) and proudly showed off every corner of the cabin to his guest in a way only a little boy would.
He showed off the black spot on the floor, scorched from a fallen candlestick, when he saw a rat above his head crawling along the rafters. He then pointed at the dented copper pot hanging above the hearth that his father threw at said rat and the other battered two beside it when one lone vermin became a brood.
(Jamie had been stricken red, adamant that there were no rats to be seen in over a year and had given his son a gaelic hush.)
Then Willie brought Claire to the cupboard he wasn't allowed to touch that kept his fathers ale and whisky. But in a secretive whisper (and with revulsion contorting his face), he told her he had in fact sipped from one of the bottles and warned against her doing the very same.
(She would another night with Jamie. . .)
Through the window as they watched the flashes of thunder, he tried to point out where their small garden was, the bitty hen house and shed for the two goats they had.
“The goats I like but they nibble m’hair and their shit stinks worse than hell and -”
“Willie!”
“But ye said so yerself, Da!”
But most importantly, Willie showed her the pantry where their food was stored. His favorites were the dried apples and jars of jam and had picked the fruits himself.
“Weel, the strawberries and blueberries and the raspberries I did. I had tae wait for the apples tae fall and I made sure there weren't any worms in them this time,” Willie grinned, as he proudly shared with Claire a jar, who declared she'd never tasted anything so delightful.
(While telling herself a worm wasn't the worst thing a person could eat)
And during all this she'd catch Jamie's eye. Kind-hearted always but glinting with questions as he watched her. That had her excusing herself, feigning tiredness, much to Willie's dismay.
The second day she had slept in again, her dreams untroubled once more. As always Willie was there to pounce on her the moment he saw her face to tell of the day he had planned for them over a breakfast that had been set aside for her.
But Claire couldn't help but notice who was missing.
"Where's your father?"
Willie, munching on one of Claire's bannocks she had given to him from her plate (filled to the brim again), mumbled from a full mouth that he was outside.
"In that!" Claire moved to the window trying to see through the blur.
"In the shed I think. There's always chores tae do but he said it's his job and mine's tae keep tae ye and for God's sake to keep out of the rain and the mud or he'd tan us both and -"
"Tan us both?" Claire looked over shoulder and quirked a brow.
Willie took a sip of goat's milk that left a milky streak above his lip. "Dinna fash. Da's never done so. He just likes tae say so 'cause he's scarrit for me and now you too."
He wiped his mouth with his sleeve. "Are ye done eatin'?"
With a hand at her full belly she gave him a nod, and Claire was dragged into his room with the excitement of a lad who'd been given a puppy to play with. He showed off his collections of rocks and brambles, jars filled with acorns and snail shells, bits and bobs of twine and fishhooks and picture books that had bird feathers and flowers and leaves pressed between the pages, and -
"Did your father carve these?"
Claire twirled a skillfully carved wooden fox between her fingers that she picked up from the windowsill. It was one among many woodland figurines that could fit in her palm, each one a breath away from life.
"Aye. For games and such and so I dinna bring home another critter like a she-coon again."
"Again?" Claire half chuckled, wondering how many animals the wee lad had sweet talked into his keeping and if she counted as one.
Willie nodded. "Da didn't like her. Said she'd pluck my eyes out with her wee claws but I told him she wouldna and had tae hide her in my room but then she crept intae da's room when I slept and tried tae eat his face - at least that's what he tells me but I think she just tried tae clean him cause da's got hair all over just like her kin."
Laughing now at the scene so bluntly described, and how Willie pulled his face into funny faces with his hands mimicking it all, Claire encouraged him to tell her more about these animal encounters (and how his poor father had apparently suffered from every single one).
During the tale of the blue backed lizard who'd escaped up his father's trouser leg, the rain had softened to a light drizzle but the wind had bellowed loud and a crack of wood splintered outside. Willie leapt to his feet off his wee bed and nearly made it through the front door before Claire pulled him back by the shoulders.
She didn't know anything really about the care of children but she was sure you didn't let one out with tree branches falling around. So Claire told him to stay put and without waiting for him to argue back had crossed the threshold outside.
It was cold.
And without a coat her bones instantly began to clatter with each step she took that sunk into the mud. But she pushed forward with her arms braced around herself as she blinked away the misty rain from her dark lashes and hollered for Jamie. He was behind the cabin and lifting a very large and heavy looking branch off the side of the goat shed, the wee animals whinging inside at being disturbed, when he turned around hearing his name, eyes blaring wide.
"Are ye mad woman!" Yelled Jamie seeing Claire. He heaved the fallen branch as if it weighed nothing at all off onto the ground, and stomped towards her with mud splashing up to his knees.
Claire rather felt like running back inside remembering what Willie had said and could see that impulse burn in the icy blue of his eyes that froze her on the spot.
"Willie and I heard a noise and he was worried about you so I came to check to see if you were alright."
If he heard her he didn't acknowledge it. Just threw an arm over her shoulder and began to pull her back towards the cabin. She opened her mouth to protest when the wind slammed against her, right into Jamie's side. Sturdy as a mountain he didn't even sway, only held to her tighter, practically picking her up from the mud’s slick grasp.
Inside, Claire untangled herself from Jamie, shivering from the damp now seeping into her clothes. While he moved his gleaming gaze to Willie, who'd been watching the whole scene from the windowsill.
“You,” he said firmly. “I told ye to keep an eye on yer lass -”
“Excuse me?” exclaimed Claire, wiping a hand against her dewed face. “ I don't belong to anyone and I certainly don't need a child to look after me.”
"Ye damn well need someone to, Sassenach. Just look at how we found ye before ye did something irrevocable.”
Jamie regretted the words as soon as they left his mouth, she looked as if he'd punched her in the gut.
“Say it,” she dared him, glaring viciously. “Before I did what. . .”
Jamie drew a long breath and raked a hand through this disheveled hair, looking downward, ashamed at himself, and listened as Claire walked away to his bedroom, locking the door he was sure.
"I'm sorry, Da. I ken ye told me tae look after her. I shoulda done better."
Jamie kneeled down in front of Willie and held a hand to his cheek.
“Hush, mo chridhe. Forget what I said. I was cross is all and took it out on ye like a bastard. Forgive me?”
Willie nodded, laughing a little at his father calling himself a bastard.
"Good. There's no one I trust more than you, ye ken that right?"
"Aye, Da," said Willie, and smiled sweetly when his father kissed his mop of curls.
"Ye should tell Claire too."
Jamie tightened his jaw, glancing to the side where she disappeared to. "I dinna ken much about women but I ken when to leave them be."
"I dinna ken much either but I think Claire will like ye more if ye say ye're sorry for being a bastard mebbe on yer knees like in the books ye read me wi' mebbe some flowers too cause girls always like them ye say -"
"Willie," Jamie squeezed him softly by the shoulders. "Never call yer father a bastard to his face even when he is one."
"What should I call ye then?"
A Dhia, he thought.
"Just say I was in the wrong and leave it at that."
Willie shrugged. "A'right. But I still think Claire will like it more if ye say ye were what ye said."
Jamie let out a heavy sigh and was quiet for a moment before he spoke. "Aye, I think so too."
Nearing the dark hours, Jamie finally heard the click of the door open and jumped to his feet, meeting Claire at the doorway of the bedroom. Before she could speak or slam the door in his face he followed Willie's advice.
"I'm sorry, Sassenach," he began, earnestly. "What I said was unforgivable. It's just when I saw ye there pale as bone and shivering so it reminded me of how you were a heartbeat away from taking yer last breath when I held you in my arms looking the verra same. It frightened me in a way I haven't felt for a long time. To have the care of someone only to lose them. But it doesna give me the right to be a bastard to ye."
"No, it doesn't, '' she agreed, wondering about the losses in this man's life that left such a scar on him to make him overreact. But knew one must be of the unspoken wife and mother missing from this home. And she felt a lurching stab of kinship with him while wishing wholeheartedly she didn't.
"But I am sorry for giving you such a fright. Twice over."
"Three," said Jamie, holding up three fingers. "Ye've given me three near heart attacks since I've met you. Starting with when I first laid eyes on ye. And ye ken well why, wee swordsman."
Claire laughed, hand to her chest, feeling it swell.
"Then I forgive you if you forgive me."
His shoulders sagged with relief and smiled.
"Och, ye did it wrong, Da," said Willie, from the corner. "Ye were supposed tae get on one knee."
Claire's face went the color of her heart now bolting beneath her hand.
"On your knee for what?!"
. . .
By the third day, Willie had taken to Claire with such affection (and she, an undeniable fondness for him), he began speaking of springs and summers she would never see. Going as far as trying to teach her the different ways to mimic bird calls with his fingers fluttering like wings.
It was then Claire felt the need to remind him of her departure and how soon that would be.
They were seated by the hearth with Willie on his little stool and Claire at his knee. He'd been showing her his favorite book all about animals, with colors painted in lovely detail of creatures beautiful and strange. His chubby fingers had landed on the slicked skin of a seal, when she placed her hand over his atop the page.
"You know I'll have to leave when the storm passes Willie, don't you?"
He gripped the edges of the book that was larger than his lap, brow scrunched as he reluctantly nodded. "That's what da says, but he hopes ye stay longer."
"Your father said that to you?"
"No, I just ken so. He just wants ye safe and happy like me,"
"Why wouldn't I be?" Before she could catch herself, Claire reached a hand to brush a lock behind the boy's ear, where memory of a loving touch doing just the same to her whispered at the shell of her own.
"Cause you were hurt and lonesome when I found ye and I dinna ken why ye want tae be so when ye leave, " croaked Willie, eyes glossing over.
A creak in the floor boards saved Claire from speaking a lie of a family waiting for her return, a home all her own. She looked up to see Jamie who nudged her shoulder with the back of his hand to kneel at Willie's hunched over form, where he spoke to his son soothing words that sounded of a gentle salve to more than one breaking heart.
That night, Jamie tried to cheer Claire up after putting Willie to bed (for once he did so without protest), by enticing her with a game of chess and a dram. She never played before nor had she ever taken a drink of spirits to her lips but she agreed wanting distraction.
Quickly though, Claire found she didn't care for the game.
Nor his cocky grin when he toppled her worthless rooks and knights, leaving her queen unguarded. Poor thing never had a chance to rule triumphant. Yet it kept her mind off the small lad and she found the taste of whiskey to be more than quite enjoyable.
Birdsong greeted Claire the next morning.
And when she opened the shutters the soft glare of dawn was there to caress her face. But a smile did not touch her lips.
With a quiet step, she approached Jamie, already awake and staring out the opened door, tapping a rhythm against its frame. He looked over his shoulder, his cat-eye blues keenly taking in her solemn face, the hesitation to speak as her bottom lip was trapped between teeth.
So he did so for her.
"Would ye care to walk wi' me, Sassenach? Tis a bonny day of sun we have for ourselves and yer wee shadow I see scowling behind ye."
Claire followed his gaze to see Willie peeking from behind his bedroom door that quickly closed.
"And," Jamie spoke again, voice sounding softer. "We must set ye on yer path wherever that is."
//
A/N: So yeah. . . .Made some changes . . . . . .
I expanded a bit of their  time together during the storm where as before I compressed the shit out of it because I had it in my head that the story really begins after Claire stays so I shouldn’t linger in those three days . . . and I also didn’t know how to write the inbetween stuff without getting too heavy (I suckity suck at writing you guys). Like Claire’s still a guest so no ones going to reveal their deep dark secrets yet. Except Willie. Who I wish I never put in this fic!

tell me everything about ur blue skittle baby >->
!!!!! Hi hi!! thank you for asking about my baby ^^ tbh I’ve been wanting to write a proper backstory about her bc I keep posting stuff but??? it's all over the p l a c e
Now…I'm gonna bold the names bc easier…
Nino’s actual full name is Balkirsh’atra’nipavla Nino is not even her core name, that would be Shatrani…She doesn’t use it because of the implications it brings. Later she marries into one of the important houses and her name lengthens into Balkir’shatra’nipavla of House Nuruodo. Her claim is a bit dubious though you will see why in a moment.
She was born in one of the outer colonies of the Chiss Ascendancy - which I call Sark - this is important because I wrote them as having….somehow different customs from the centre - Csilla. The planet is more or less governed by the House Nipavla though it changed hands between a few families in the past.
They live on the frigid surface of the planet instead of setting cities under the ice and are thought to be…on the line of less ‘refined’ due to this and the numerous wild animals that habitat the planet which led to a culture centring around it…The planet’s on the very outer lines so they are dangerously close to being out of the borders and numerous attempts were made to bring them closer to the core territory though it never worked - just because of sheer stubbornness.
A tiny piss poor rebel of a colony in a way…So even though Nino is the daughter of the Patriarch she’s not a noble in the sense of a ‘noble’ she never really had anything more than the bare minimum like the rest of the people living there. So…like any neglected community, they want independence and the alliance with Empire only strengthens these ideals. They think they will be thrown into the fire first as soon as things go south with their not-so-loved reputation and; Nino’s father, Asker knowing he could never single-handedly earn autonomy tries desperately to ally with one of the ruling houses.- Nuruodo.
Nino was getting trained to be a soldier as soon she could hold a gun anyway, pretty much all her education is based on being a good fighter, as opposed to her twin brother, Shota who is getting his education about diplomacy… - he uses this and offers his daughter’s services to the ruling household with the excuse of them not having enough resources to properly educate her ‘natural skill’ to combat. They can take her in and prepare her to join the Chiss Defense Force.
Out of pity or goodwill, the request is accepted when she’s about…10 years old. Nino leaves Sark for Naporar. The change is brutal. Nino can never get used to it and the people there don’t make it easy, however, it gets worse when she’s informed about her engagement to the son of one of the important generals there. Cousin to Aristocra. It’s the best they can do, her father says and without really discussing anything they get married hurriedly when she’s about 12 - early, even for unusual chiss standards. I imagine it to be 17-18 in human years. Needless to say, nothing up to this point is ever consulted, Nino. She is to do as she was commanded, like any good obedient soldier. And most importantly - for their people. Asker thoroughly believes he’ll be able to break the alliance between the Empire and the Ascendancy through these plans and ‘liberate’ Sark. And he keeps feeding it to Nino who uses it as a defence against her deep unhappiness. It doesn’t matter what she thinks as long as people on a larger scale will be happy. Her belief she could never shake off as long as she lives, about her life having no worth depends on these years.
As loyal and painfully selfless as she is, Nino is not an android. After she eventually joins the Chiss Expansionary Defense Force which is more or less her lifeline and salvation, she takes some sort of revenge by getting into an affair with one of the common soldiers there. Malig. One without even a household name. She’s not particularly in love but she goes as far as getting pregnant. And more than anything she loves that he loves her. She believes he’s the first person who ever actually loved her, even her brother was apathetic and uninterested never been much of a source of affection or her mother, Tamala, a police officer who would rather patrol the wilderness instead of take a glance at her children, possibly also got married due to political interests.
Anyway…This is when things start to tear apart actually. Nino’s husband, Pasha can’t have children and of course, the affair is unravelled at once. Oddly enough this isn’t much of an issue - as long as she accepts never seeing the ‘father’ again. And she has to accept it after Malig her offer to run away to not make her lose everything she has. He claims that he has nothing to give her anyway and that she should not throw away her reputation - and her house’s reputation for something as sentimental as love. Yes, he loves her but it’s not worth it. Let down and belittled once again Nino accepts her place and diminishes any sort of individuality that had sparked even just for a few moments…She starts seeing her husband in a different light who also takes a kinder approach to her.
Everything goes normal…even happy for a few months but during the last month of the pregnancy, Malig starts blaming himself for Nino’s ‘unhappiness’ as he believes, he gives up on his life to save the woman he loves from a life of misery - again, from his point of view - he promptly assassinates her husband during a peaceful dinner he was invited to. It’s done so quickly and unexpectantly that no one can stop it. He is shot without a trial. Dies after a few hours leaving Nino the brunt of the wreckage to deal with. Nuruodo tries to keep it as quiet as they can even going as far as acting as though it didn’t happen as to not hurt the House’s reputation as an unbeatable military force. So there is no jail time but the consequences are grave no matter. Further sanctions are applied upon the Nipavla and the limited support is lowered to the hunger threshold pushing the house for illegal resources and its people to immigration.
Events develop very fast afterwards.
There is not enough evidence to blame Nino but she’s sent to her colony at once much to Asker’s anger who couldn’t even start his plans to infiltrate the army. In a few weeks, Nino gives birth and as his form of revenge, Asker takes the baby, hiding him away and lying to Nino, saying it was stillborn. Luckily for him, she doesn’t ask to see her son - now named Lazar - traumatized beyond logical thinking. It’s not all for revenge though but for protection too as normally in dubious cases like this, the baby must be given for adaptation to be raised as a shadow child. The following year she’s posted to Hoth with her brother in tow instead of the dishonourable discharge or exile she’d get normally. She is too good of a soldier to waste. OF FUCKING COURSE things don’t go as normally as they should so she can take a breath. No. Asker uses the last way and convinces his son, Shota - who is already depressed and suicidal - to blow himself up in the middle of the Imperial side of the barracks. Suicide bombing. Not to kill aliens though it’s a positive side effect - but to give a message and the message is given, alright. Though this doesn’t stop the alliance between them, Sark does gain its autonomy to prove the Chiss Ascendancy does have no relations with the ‘terrorists’…The life afterwards there is tough but it grows steadily with minimal influences from Csilla and some very supportive folks. In the inner circle, the act is not loathed like they like to show off, which helps the small colony. The chiss are still heavily xenophobic, some even think of Shota and Asker as heroes against the foreign forces.
Again one who takes the brunt of the damage is Nino. She’s only about 16 and about to lose her goddamn mind. With the bridges burned and her entry from the Ascendancy blocked, exiled in all but the name she loses all purpose. She thoroughly believes she failed in every possible way, as a soldier, as a daughter, a wife, and a mother. She blames herself for her brother’s death as well, as her son’s death and Malig’s death. On top of that if she can’t serve her people what is there to live for? She thinks about shooting herself like any self-respected chiss but a part of her who had once thought about running away doesn’t want to die. Not really. She makes an excuse about not wanting to waste her skill and starts taking mercenary jobs here and there. Like a fish out of water. Her Basic is bad, she doesn’t even understand how credits work yet. But she’s fighting. She’ll die fighting, at least.
That’s when she meets Kurshi…Let me just uhhhh
this...I won’t write that again as well..but he’s a very important person. It leads to her joining the Great Hunt.
Now that her backstory is out of the way…
Nino has big issues… - it’s almost hard to say how her personality would develop without the constant traumatic events. She is ridiculously loyal it ruined her life and her mentality but still, she’d cut her arm off instead of questioning it if the command was given…by…let’s say Mandalore.
Loyalty, duty and compassion are the core of personality. It’d be a challenge to find someone more devoted than Nino. She has a bit of a hero complex which makes her willing to sacrifice her life for anyone and anything as if it means nothing and the hive-like mindset of a Chiss Ascendancy soldier, puts the needs of the many above the needs of the few. She doesn’t care for credits and she also doesn’t care for rudeness. Even though she tends to let people walk over her this tends to snap off when dealing with ‘aliens’ and her pride got her into a lot of trouble at times.
She hates crudeness, and cruelty and will take offence to the most ridiculous things sometimes. She’s not so secretive though which is the first change she gained after leaving - or trying to leave - her past behind. Will talk about her thoughts openly without a reservation since she knows she can’t lie - blushes immediately - and bottling up her feelings only makes her remember her life back at home. Now she’s almost too blunt at times.
Though Mandalore’s clan turned out quite a bit different from a chiss household the structure it gave to her life proved to be a great comfort and perhaps a reason to live just like the Chiss Defence Force once had been. Only this time she had chosen it at her will which makes it more special even though she would never admit it to herself. She’s also very affectionate and emotional so she used to constantly drink to suppress them and force herself into dullness. She has a very childish sense of humour and an intense interest in reading and writing. She’s hardworking, deeply protective, and loving and will dote on the few people she loves but will rarely let anyone dote on her.
Ummm what else what else…Despite her kind personality Nino likes to fight. It’s what she did all her life after all..she might complain and all but I doubt she’d find peace sitting on her ass. On the other hand, she wants a family and has children of her own…a house…Domesticity.
That’s Nino!!! I think!!!! If you have anything to ask I’d be happy to answer ^^

Hi! I just recently found that you're asexual too, and married! So may I ask what's your opinion on romantic relationships? I'm always confuse about the connection between romance and sex, sometimes friends have sex but they're still friends, and normally in fictions or real life people told me they know she/he's the one because they could picture them in bed/kiss/hug, which didn't help my confusion at all. I mean I just don't see what's so different from friendships, minus the sex part? ThankS
I mean, like, the connection between sex and romance is correlation only. Just remember, correlation does NOT equal causation. You don’t need one to have the other, and having one doesn’t mean you have the other.
For me, romantic feeling are really not that different than friendship, but that’s mostly because in order to be romantically interested in someone, I personally find it very important to be friends with the person? Like I guess I don’t understand how someone could be romantically interested in someone they are not friends with, too. So, I find it entirely unsurprising that it’s hard for others to separate the two, too. I’ll try my best to explain the two feelings.
Friendship- I’ve had a lot of friends over my life, and most of them have come and gone when they or I needed to. We drift, sometimes away, sometimes back together. Some of them live on the other side of the planet and we have periods of intense interaction interspersed with periods of non-contact. Some of them I only hear from every few months. Some of them I talk obsessively on the phone with practically daily. Some of them live with me, move to far away other places, move back, move other places, and visit me (or I visit them) as time allows. Some of them I’ve never even met in real life. But the thing is, for me, friendship waxes and wanes. When friends step into and out of my life, it is something I accept because I honestly believe that friendship is fluid.
The difference between the love I feel for Sark and the love I feel for my friends is that I do not want to NOT have him. Like, I remember very, very clearly the moment I realized that fact. I was sitting at a stop light after having gone on an adventure with him, and when I left to go home, I had said something along the lines of “you know, some day you’re gonna find a girl to love and she’s not gonna want you to keep hanging out with me” (a sentiment I had because I had briefly dated Sark in high school as well, so TECHNICALLY I was an Ex™).
And sitting at that stoplight, I realized like. wow. no. That can’t happen. I cannot let that happen. In no way do I want to let this person leave my life if it is within my power to prevent it. I want to stay with him. I want to go to sleep next to him, wake up next to him. I want to come home to him. This is the person I want to share my life with.
So, I guess that’s really it, in my case. I found someone I didn’t want to grow apart from, someone I didn’t want to give up if my life changed for the better or for the worse. Now that I think about it, maybe that’s why that line is in marriage vows.

Average -Minicat- Part 2, Craig
I wasn’t lying, talking to this woman gave me a rush of adrenaline that I don’t normally feel. I’m not one to get nervous talking to others, as evident of my job, and feeling this fear about a woman who is far shorter than I, just makes me more intrigued. Why was she making me like this? Was is just the assertive vibe her outfit gave out? Finally, I shrugged it off. Probably nothing, probably just the stale coffee from this morning.
“And might I ask, do you believe in any other solu-” Her watch started beeping with a red flash. Quickly, she pushed her coat down even more and muttered an apology, before running off. Yet, none of it happened before I saw the screen, three long numbers in an urgent bold. They all started with a five, but that was all I could make. I regained posture from the sudden disappearance, and turned to the camera, where David gave me a thumbs up to keep going.
“And so, even with the short amount of information there we’ve undoubtedly gathered that there will in fact be another case regarding the false accusations, and the rape,” As I continued to blabber on, I slowly inched towards the large crowd of protesters, hoping to get more people’s opinions. That’s when they started screaming, and the first explosion happened. I snapped around and stared at the crowd surging inwards rather than out. Then the second one went off, pushing them out. David jumped in front of the camera and pulled us both towards the ground and the third explosion sent them tumbling in. Five explosions later, people finally scrambled.
“Daithi back behind the camera now, now now now!” I hollered over the dying screams of the wounded and terrified of fleeing. He gave me a look of sheer crazy, before going behind the camera. I stood up and he directed the lens at me again. And I spoke with pure fear. “To anyone witnessing the events happening beyond us right now, if there are any relatives or friends of your who have been said to be here, do not come for them.” Another explosion rocked the earth, and I flinched, hearing how close it was to us. I covered my head before continuing on. “If you are anywhere near Danville Park at all, I say this with utter honesty, do not. Do not leave your house, even if it is to go to your neighbors. I have no knowledge of any other attacks, and am not certain if they will remain in this park alone or if they will branch out into the city. Stay where you are, if you are in a car or outside, get inside, somewhere safe. If you see any suspicious people in the streets, report them to the police. Keep an eye out for any homemade bombs, which normally look like a crockpot with a phone on top. Do not get yourself hurt.”
“The camera isn’t working,” David yelled. “It cut off when you said don’t get hurt, it like died ‘er something!” I cursed under my breath, and another explosion went off, and we both crouched down. That was when I saw the small metal piece sticking out of the ground under the bench, exactly what I had just described, only buried under dirt and trash.
“Bomb!” I screeched, hurriedly scampering away while still on the ground. “David run! Daithi! GO!” Then the ground launched up, the bench flying into the air and breaking into wood. It was licked with flames. Rock and glass buried into my skin, and the velocity of the dirt felt like tiny bullets piercing my face. Blood was trickling into my eyes through broken glasses, and my leg was literally on fire. Daithi was doing no better, his shirt was torn in the front and he was bleeding in the head, he had gotten up and was limping towards me.
“Down!” I screeched. "Get the hell down and stay there you injured fuck.” It took me a moment to actually put the flames out on my pants, and with the adrenaline of shock running through me I didn’t even feel the searing pain of the burn.  It could’ve been far worse, and my god I thought that was it. That we were safe and we could help people. Wiping blood away from my face, it took me a moment before realizing that someone was now shooting in the still large crowd. The amount of people was good in a sense of the bombs didn’t get as many as initially thought, but yet horrific in favor that someone had a gun and was shooting at them.
I quickly scooted over to Daithi, taking off my coat as I did. At the moment it would be a great bandage until help arrived, with by the sound of sirens, shouldn’t be too long. Quickly ripping off the sleeves, I bandaged the Irishman's head as best I could and attempted to splint his leg, which had turned a disgusting purple and black. Although he waved it off, saying tying fabric around it wouldn’t help, and then further destroyed the jacket and wrapped my own head and the burn. With the remains, we tried our best to clean blood off of our skin, but most of it had crusted over.
“Can you walk?” I asked Daithi, standing up with a slight wobble. The burn wasn’t too bad, right under my kneecap. The only dilemma was that it burned my bad knee, so undoubtedly it was completely screwed by now.
“No,” Daithi muttered, and I ushed him to lay down as a spray of bullets hit the ground near us. I had almost been able to block out the horrific screams until then, now they were relentlessly bludgeoning my eardrums
“Then I’ll drag you to safety,” I muttered. “It’s gonna hurt, but being dead will hurt a lot fucking more.”
“Well if I was dead I wouldn’t feel anything, so how would it hurt?” Daithi asked as I hooked my arms under his armpits, and began to slowly drag him towards a restaurant's door.
“I didn’t say it would be painful for you,” I sighed, and his mouth fell to an open o for a second, and then quickly caught himself.
             “Geez, Craig, that’s a..”
“Dark and morbid truth? Yeah so is life.” We didn’t talk until I’d finally gotten him all the way over and inside the restaurant, which had dozens of terrified people in it, who started screaming questions at the two of us. I weaved my way back to the door when someone stopped me.
“Don’t try and play the hero,” A waiter said, blocking the doorway completely. “You’ll kill yourself, and we don’t need anymore death today. It's not even eight in the morning.”
              “I- I’m not trying to I just-”
“You said it yourself just a few minutes ago. Get inside and don’t leave, keep yourself safe. That counts for everyone, even the one who said it.” I looked down at his name tag, which was partially covered in flour.
“Listen uh, Sark. Sark is it? Scott? God, sorry if I uh.. Whatever, I need to get out there and help, I just,” I couldn’t come up with a valid reason, so I quickly pushed the older man out of the way and ran out the door, yelling for him to take care of Daithi. It was stupid how much I wanted to play hero, how much I wanted to get other people out and alive, or at least with as minor injuries as I could, and I knew I would not ever, and could not ever try and attack one of the men with guns- wherever they were.
I picked up a long splintered wood with a few nails and screws driven into it. At least then I wasn’t completely unarmed and unprotected, in case that I ran into shooting range. Even then, the chances were slim of survival.
Making my way slowly back towards where we abandoned the camera, There was a small group of four men, who appeared to be calmly talking amidst all the chaos. Then I started picking out the finer details. One, strangely enough wearing a pig mask, had his hands in the air, while one is a red cap pointed a gun at him. The other two guys there seemed to be red cap’s ‘buddies.’ Without thinking, I made my way over there, not worrying about being quiet, since the noise around us was masking any sound a limp could make. My fingers dug into the wood, splinters poking through my skin and bleeding red onto the charred brown. When I was finally close enough, I took a deep breath, and swung at the man with a gun, the other two appearing unarmed. The weapon I had ripped from grip and dug into his back, nails and all, and he started screaming.
One of the two instantly went to the gunman, grabbing the gun from his hands and swinging it around at me. The other threw himself at me, wrapping strong arms around my body, where I had not moved in utter shock of what had happened. They were screaming at me in jumbled words, and then I was being dragged along. Finally snapping back, I screamed for hell, praying that Satan would drag them back down to hell. I kicked my legs and started fighting the man's grasp, I couldn’t see his face from any angle I tried.
The waiter, Sark, was right. I shouldn’t have played hero.

Donald Crowhurst: The fake round-the-world sailing story behind The Mercy
The mysterious and tragic disappearance of the single-handed sailor Donald Crowhurst more than 50 years ago continues to fascinate. Nic Compton explains why…
Hailed as a round the world single-handed hero, Donald Crowhurst in fact never left the Atlantic during his 243 days at sea. Photo: Alamy
It was while I was researching my book about madness at sea in 2015 that I first heard a movie about Donald Crowhurst was in the works. Several websites published reports of a high-profile British feature starring Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz, and a few surreptitious photos of the cast filming off Teignmouth had been posted online. It seemed a lucky coincidence, given that my book would inevitably feature the Crowhurst story, but I assumed the movie would come out long before my book was ready.
Over the next couple of years, however, the release date for the film was repeatedly postponed – so much so that it became a running topic among Hollywood gossipmongers, who speculated that Crowhurst’s widow Clare had delayed progress, or that it was being held back to tie with the 50th anniversary of the events, or indeed that it might never be released in cinemas and go straight to DVD instead.
Meanwhile, I carried on writing my book, Off the Deep End, which was published in 2017, and the movie, The Mercy, was released in February 2018. There was never any doubt the tragic story of Donald Crowhurst would have to be included in any book about madness at sea.

Of all the stories I researched, it’s the one that has caught the public imagination most. Long before the latest Hollywood offering it inspired movies, books, plays, art installations, an epic poem and even an opera. Whereas many stories of adventures at sea seem to leave the general public cold, the Crowhurst tale continues to fascinate more than 50 years after Teignmouth’s most famous sailor vanished without trace. And yet, despite the thousands of words written about him, we really know very little more about him than we did 50 years ago.
It all started when Francis Chichester made his historic single-handed circumnavigation in 1966-67 – not the first to do so, by any means, but certainly the fastest up to that point, completing the loop in 226 days with just one stop, in Sydney, to repair his self-steering. Even before he’d docked at Plymouth there was a general realisation, which spread like osmosis throughout the sailing world, that the next step would be to sail around solo without stopping.
The challenge was turned into a contest by the Sunday Times which, in March 1968, announced two prizes: a Golden Globe trophy for the first person to sail round the world via the Three Capes single-handed and non-stop, and a £5,000 cash prize for the person to do it in the fastest time. The only stipulation was that competitors had to leave from a British port between 1 June and 31 October 1968, and had to return to the same place.
Article continues below…
A voyage for 21st Century madmen? What drives the Golden Globe skippers
A voyage for madmen, so was the original Sunday Times Golden Globe Race deemed. When the first non-stop race around…
How extreme barnacle growth hobbled the 2018-19 Golden Globe Race fleet
Eighty-knot gales, 10m-high waves, pitchpoling, loneliness and ever-depleting food reserves… of all the challenges facing a single-handed non-stop circumnavigator you…
Nine skippers eventually signed up for the race: the famous transatlantic rowing duo Chay Blyth and John Ridgway, who had by then fallen out but were sailing near-identical 30ft glassfibre production boats; Bernard Moitessier, already something of a legend in France for breaking the long-distance sailing record on his steel ketch Joshua; Moitessier’s friend Loïc Fougeron; Robin Knox-Johnston, an unknown British merchant navy officer sailing a heavy wooden boat called Suhaili; two former British naval officers, Bill King and Nigel Tetley; the experienced Italian single-handed sailor Alex Carozzo; and Donald Crowhurst.
Out of the group, Crowhurst was by far the least experienced, the odd one out. Born in India in 1932, he went to Loughborough College after the war, until family nances and the death of his father forced him to cut his education short. He joined the RAF in 1948 but was chucked out after six years because of some high jinks with a vehicle; the same thing happened when he joined the army and he was forced to resign after he was caught trying to hotwire a car during a drunken escapade.
Persuasive character

Next he got as job as a travelling salesman for an electrics company, but was again dismissed after crashing the company car.
Ever-persuasive, he talked himself into a job as chief design engineer for an electronics company in Somerset, and in 1962 set up his own company, Electron Utilisation, to manufacture electronic devices for yachts.
The company got off to a good start, selling a simple but well-designed radio direction finder which Crowhurst dubbed the Navicator. Pye Radio invested £8,500 in the project, before getting cold feet and pulling out.
It quickly became clear that while Crowhurst was a charismatic personality and brilliant innovator he didn’t have the business acumen to run a successful company, and Electron Utilisation was soon in financial trouble.
Crowhurst managed to persuade local businessman Stanley Best to invest £1,000 to carry the company over what he assured him was a temporary lean period.
It must have been obvious to Crowhurst that he was heading for another failure. By now 35 years old, he could see the same pattern repeating itself, of high ambition thwarted by petty practicalities. Only, by now married to Clare with four children and living in a comfortable house outside Bridgwater in Somerset, the stakes were higher than ever.
His response to failure was to reinvent himself yet again. This time he would become a record-breaking sailor, a seafaring hero in the vein of Chichester: he would sail around the world single-handed – even though he had until then only dabbled in sailing, mainly on board a 20ft sloop called Pot of Gold. First, however, he needed a boat.
After failing to persuade the Cutty Sark Committee to lend him Gipsy Moth IV for the voyage, he decided a trimaran would be the ideal craft – despite having never sailed on one. To get the funding to build his dream boat he achieved perhaps the greatest coup of his life.
With Electron Utilisation going down the pan, his backer Stanley Best wanted his loan repaid, but Crowhurst managed to persuade him the best way to get his money back would be to fund the construction of the new boat.

The crux of his argument was that he would use the trimaran as a test bed for his new inventions, and the publicity gained from entering the race would catapult the company to success. The sting in the tail was that the loan was guaranteed by Electron Utilisation, which meant that, if the venture failed, the company would go bankrupt.
To understand how he managed this turnaround you have to go back in time. Photos of Crowhurst make him look geekish and uncool to the modern eye. With his sticky-out ears, high forehead, curly hair, tie and V-neck jumper, he appears the epitome of the eccentric inventor.
But all the contemporary accounts describe him as a charismatic, vibrant personality, the sort of person who lights up a room when they walk in – as well as being extremely clever. In fact, his cleverness was his problem. He had the gift of the gab and, once persuaded of something, could talk anyone into believing him.
“This is important,” said his wife Clare. “Donald had this definite talent. He would say the most amazing things, but then no matter how crazy they seemed, he’d be clever and ingenious enough to make them come true. Always. This is a most important point about his character.”

Slow off the mark
So Crowhurst got the money for Teignmouth Electron, which was built by Cox Marine in Essex and fitted out by JL Eastwood in Norfolk. It’s a measure of how far behind he was that by the time the Cox yard started building the hulls towards the end of June, Ridgway, Blyth and Knox-Johnston had already set off on their round-the-world attempts. In the event, complications meant the launch date was delayed and even when Crowhurst finally set off on 31 October – just a few hours before the Sunday Times deadline expired – his boat was barely complete.
None of the clever inventions he had devised for the boat were connected, including the all-important buoyancy bag at the top of the mast, which was supposed to inflate if the trimaran capsized. His revolutionary ‘computer’, which was supposed to monitor the performance of the boat and set off various safety devices, was no more than a bunch of unconnected wires.
Worse still, he had had to borrow yet more money from Best to finish the boat, and had mortgaged his home to guarantee the loan. Crowhurst made a desultory figure scrambling about the deck of his trimaran as he set off on his great adventure – only to turn around within a few minutes to untangle his jib and staysail halyards, which were snagged at the top of the mast.
It was just the start of his troubles. After two days at sea, while still within sight of Cornwall, the screws started falling off his self-steering and, not having any spares on board, he had to cannibalise other parts of the machine to replace them.
A leaky boat
A few days later, halfway across the Bay of Biscay, he discovered the forward compartment of one of the hulls had filled up with water from a leaking hatch.
Soon, other compartments began to leak and, as he’d been unable to get the correct piping for the bilge pumps, his only option was to bail them out with a bucket. Then, two weeks after leaving Teignmouth, his generator broke down after being soaked with water from another leaking hatch.
“This bloody boat is just falling to pieces due to lack of attention to engineering detail!!!” he wrote in his log. A few days later he made a long list of jobs that needed doing and concluded his chances of survival if he carried on were at best 50/50. He began to think about abandoning the race.
But Crowhurst was in a triple bind. If he dropped out at this stage, not only would his reputation be destroyed but his business would go bankrupt and, perhaps worse of all, he and his family would lose their home. For all these reasons, giving up was not an option.
It soon became clear his estimates for the boat’s speed had been wildly optimistic: he had estimated an average of 220 miles per day, whereas the reality was about half that, on a good day. There was no way he was going to catch up with the other competitors or win either of the prizes, unless something extraordinary happened.
And so, just five weeks after setting off from Teignmouth, Crowhurst started one of the most audacious frauds in sailing history: he began falsifying his position. From 5 December, he created a fake log book, with accurately plotted sun sights, working back from imaginary positions.
To make it look convincing, he listened to forecasts for the relevant areas and wrote a fictional commentary as if he was experiencing those conditions. It was quite a feat of seamanship, and only someone of Crowhurst’s brilliance could have carried it off convincingly.
The great deception
After a few days’ practice he felt sufficiently confident to send his first ‘fake’ press release, claiming he’d sailed 243 miles in 24 hours, a new world record for a single-handed sailor. In fact, he’d actually sailed 160 miles, a personal best perhaps, but certainly no world record.
And so the great deception began. As Crowhurst slowly worked his way down the Atlantic, his imaginary avatar was already rounding the Cape of Good Hope and heading into the Indian Ocean. Gradually, partly through misunderstandings and partly due to the spin added by his agent back in the UK, Crowhurst’s positions became ever more exaggerated, until it looked like he might win the race after all.
Meanwhile, the real Crowhurst was pottering around the Atlantic – ‘hiding’ in exactly the same area he had, only a few weeks earlier, jokingly suggested a sailor might hide to falsify a round-the-world voyage. To make sure his radio signals weren’t picked up by the wrong land stations, he maintained radio silence for nearly three months, from the middle of January until the beginning of April, which he blamed on his generator breaking down again.
Teignmouth Electron was found drifting in mid-Atlantic, 700 miles west of the Azores, on 10 July 1969
Unbelievably, he even put ashore in a remote bay near Buenos Aires in Argentina to buy materials to repair one of the hulls, which had started to fall apart. Despite being greeted and logged by local officials, this rule-breaking stop remained undetected.
On 29 March he reached his most southerly point, hovering a few miles off the Falklands, 8,000 miles from home, before starting his ascent up the Atlantic.
Finally, on 9 April, he broke radio silence and exploded back into the race with a telegram containing the infamous line: “HEADING DIGGER RAMREZ” – suggesting he was approaching Diego Ramirez, a small island southwest of Cape Horn (in reality, he was just off Buenos Aires).
By this time Moitessier had had his ‘moment of madness’ and had dropped out of the race and was sailing to Tahiti ‘to save his soul’. The only other competitors left were Knox-Johnston, who was plodding slowly up the Atlantic and on track to be the first one home, and Tetley, racing in his wake to pick up the prize for the fastest voyage.

It seems likely that Crowhurst was planning to finish a close second to Tetley, which would save him from financial ruin without drawing too much attention to his fraudulent log books.
But his reappearance in the race had a dramatic effect on the course of events. Already nursing a broken boat up the homeward leg of the Atlantic, Tetley worried he might lose the speed record to the resurgent Crowhurst, and started pushing his trimaran faster towards the finish line. Some 1,100 miles from home, the inevitable happened: Tetley’s boat broke up and sank, and he had to be rescued by a passing ship.
Suddenly, the spotlight shifted to Crowhurst, the unlikely amateur who’d apparently come out of nowhere to beat the professionals. The BBC had a crew on standby to record his homecoming and hundreds of thousands of people were expected to throng the seafront at Teignmouth to welcome him home.
It was everything Crowhurst dreaded. As one of the winners, his books would come under much closer scrutiny – and indeed there were already some, including race chairman Francis Chichester, who suspected something wasn’t quite right.
In the middle of June, Crowhurst reached the Sargasso Sea and, as the tradewinds died and his boat slowed down, he descended into a mental quagmire of his own. It was as if all his previous failures had caught up with him in this one grand, final failure.

And this time there was no way out, no way of reinventing himself. Instead, he gave up ‘sailorising’ and resorted to philosophising instead. Over the course of a week, he wrote a 25,000-word manifesto that described how mankind had achieved such an advanced evolutionary state that it could now merge with the cosmos. All that was needed was ‘an effort of free will’.
He ended his journal on 1 July with this desperate appeal: ‘I will only resign this game / if you agree that / the next occasion that this / game is played / it will be played / according to the / rules that are devised by / my great god who has / revealed at last to his son / not only the exact nature / of the reason for games but / has also revealed the truth of / the way of the ending of the / next game that / It is finished / It is finished / IT IS THE MERCY’
There then followed a countdown, ending at 11:20:40 precisely. It’s not known what happened next, but it’s generally assumed Crowhurst jumped over the side of the boat to his death. His empty yacht was found by a passing ship on 10 July with two sets of log books on board: the real and the fake.
It was left to Sunday Times journalists Nicholas Tomalin and Ron Hall to piece together what had happened and to reveal to the world Crowhurst’s elaborate hoax. With Crowhurst and Tetley both out of the race, Knox-Johnston, on his slow wooden tortoise of a boat, was the only person to finish the race and was duly award both prizes – though he subsequently donated the £5,000 cash prize to Crowhurst’s widow.
Huge public interest
The Golden Globe race generated enormous public interest at the time, and the discovery of Crowhurst’s boat was front page news. It’s a fascination that has continued almost unabated to this day. The French film Les Quarantièmes Rugissants, based on the Crowhurst story, was released in 1982, while at least five plays have picked up the theme, as well as the 1998 opera Ravenshead.
There have been several books published about Crowhurst and the race more generally, although none of them add anything substantial to the story told by Tomalin and Hall in their 1970 book The Strange Story of Donald Crowhurst.
In 2006, the acclaimed documentary Deep Water incorporated contemporary footage of the race, including some shot by Crowhurst during his voyage, and in 2017 director Simon Rumley released his own stylised take on the story, called simply Crowhurst.
The Mercy, then, is only the latest take on the Crowhurst saga – although with Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz on board, it is the most high-profile. So how does it compare to previous efforts?
As you’d expect of such a mainstream movie, the focus is firmly on the psychological drama rather than on the sailing – which is probably just as well considering how often films get the details of sailing wrong. There are some minor errors – Chichester wasn’t the first person to sail around the world single-handed, and the prize for the first competitor to finish the race was a trophy, not £5,000 – but the sailing scenes are generally quite convincing.
More importantly though, The Mercy is a captivating psychological drama, which shows how, through a series of small steps, a person can box themselves into a corner from which there is no escape. It’s this humbling of a deluded but essentially well-meaning man that gives the story such resonance and has inspired artists and writers for more than five decades. For, as anyone who has sailed out of sight of land knows, the sea has a knack of bringing out our inner demons. There is a Crowhurst in us all.

The most beautiful words and lessons in life
The judgment and the words we hear resonate within us, perhaps because they explain a reality we live in, or because they describe a stage we loved, but now it is past and finished. In this article we mention a set of judgments and lessons.
Your beneficence of the heat incites him to reward, and your charity to the despicable brings him back to the matter. Satan said: Wonder for the sons of Adam! They love and disobey God, hate me and obey me !! Do not seek injustice on unjust, so as not to be prey to the two. If people only talk about what they know, there will be quiet in many places. Brothers as bad as fire, burn each other. Sometimes children say words that we do not like, we have spoken to them. To prevent someone from falling much better than helping him after he fell. Those born in storms are not afraid of wind. Honesty Ezz even if it is what you hate, and lying Zl even if it is what you love. It is not a mistake to go back as long as you have walked in the wrong way. The happiest of those hearts that spring to others. Amnesty cures better than punishment sometimes. When a man cooperated on the rise of the mountain approached with him from the top. Be careful and you advise .. Some may believe you. There is always someone who is worse than you, so he smiled. We all like the moon has a dark side. If the loser smiles, the victor loses the thrill of victory. You will not be able to prevent the birds of concern from flying over your head, but you can prevent them from nesting in it. Befriend with the wolves, always be ready. Those of despicable souls find pleasure in the search for the mistakes of the great. Who is born and crawls can not fly. One of the great ones feels that he is small, but the great one is the one who feels in his presence that they are great. As more higher up, it rises to the clouds around him and tribulations. Do not argue with an ignorant for it hard for people to differentiate between you. Being an individual in the group of lions is better for you than being a leader of the ostrich. If you have a strong memory, and bitter memories, you are the most miserable people of the earth. You should not say everything you know, but you should know everything you say. Do not spit in the well; you might drink from it one day. It is not hard to sacrifice for a friend, but it is hard to find a friend who deserves sacrifice. Life is full of stones, so do not stumble upon it, but gather it, and build a ladder that will lift it towards success. At the moment you feel like you are a person in this world, while there is someone in the world who feels you are the whole world. It is the successful person who closes his mouth before people close their ears and opens his ears before people open their mouths. The discussion of trivial issues takes a long time, because some of us know more about them than about important issues. When people praise people, few believe it, and when they do, everyone believes. Choose your words before you speak, and give the choice enough time to mature speech, words like fruits need enough time to mature. Be wary of kareem if you insult him, and if he is deceived, it is wise if you embarrassed him, and the foolish if mercy. If you share your enemy, give advice to him, because he has gone out of your favor to your loyalties. Do not argue eloquently or in any way, so the eloquent will prevail over you and the forgiveness will hurt you. One of the etiquette of dialogue is to think a lot, to conclude long, to speak a little, and not to ignore everything you hear. Of course, you will need it in the future. Do not hesitate to regret those who have sinned, and see his eyes and you say a sorry word, to read it in your eyes as he hears it with his ears. It is the manners of marriage to marry a good conversationalist. When you get older, you will know the importance of this, when talking to someone you love becomes your top priority. If you love someone, go to him and say that you love him, unless you do not mean what you really say, because he will know the truth by looking into your eyes.
The sword is the truest news of the books, the limit between the grandfather and the play. If you are in all things your friend's letter has not received which you adore. On the fate of the people come resolute, and come to the dignity of dignified. For those who are difficult or hard to grasp, so what hopes have reached only Saber. Science is not considered to benefit alone unless it is crowned with ethics. how fair envy is, it starts with its owner and kills him. Do not stretch a man until you try it, and do not grind it without experimentation. If everything is shortened, then it is not a good thing to live. These are the things that nations have seen, from the secret of a time that has long been dark. First Packages advice. The thought of the wise is better than the certainty of the ignorant. Evil is very few. Perhaps silence was an answer. Leave an answer. The Lord of the insole is evil of the hypocrite. Each addressed to his tongue Tamra. It is enough to doubt ignorance. Make your Sark in one, and your advice in A. Do not say, Lord, they are great to me, but say, 'Oh, they have a great Lord.' Everything can be killed except the printers. Everything needs a mind, mind needs consultation. Minds talents and science gains. Famous Sayings and Rulings The mother hopes to find a better husband for her daughter than her father, and believes that her son will not find a wife like his mother. Always talk about yourself as evidence that you are not confident. We must have a ready-made cemetery where we can find friends' mistakes. I would consider him my lord, even if he were my servant. Clapping is the only way we can interrupt a speaker without incurring his anger. Whoever insults people, including mentioning them with their misdeeds. The peak of literature is that man is ashamed of himself. The woman's shyness is more attractive than her beauty. The most tired man tired and standing in place. Nothing in existence raises the amount of women like chastity. Those who hear you speak sweetly and feed you with an empty spoon. Who thought of the consequences did not like. Do not burden your day with the worries of your future. Your worries may not come, and you will be deprived of the pleasure of your day. Happy houses have no voice. Three things fall down the value of women: love of money, selfishness, love of control, three raised: sacrifice, loyalty, virtue. The difference of opinion should not lead to hostility, otherwise I and my wife would be the greatest enemy. Of his many words he multiplied his sins. Whoever speaks about himself with what he likes, people will speak about him with what he hates. If you are honest, why alliance? He who speaks a great deal either knows a lot, or he lies a lot. The best treatment for anxiety is to talk about your feelings to those you trust. Women prefer to be more beautiful than to be smart, because they know that a man sees with his eyes more than he thinks of his mind. When a woman hates a man to death, it means that she loved him to death. Ruling and proverbs, and through the invocation does not prevail, and die only when it is limited. If the speech is silver, the silence is gold. Do not say without thinking, and do not work without measure. Of your growth. In union strength, in dispersion weakness and vanity. Good brevity makes sense. Whoever finds a grandfather, and who sowed the harvest, and who walked on the path arrived, and asked for the night of the feast. To burn a candle is better than to curse the darkness. Anger is a wind blowing. It is our duty to remain optimistic about the future, but cautiously. The real hero does not give up his friends in time of distress. Your tongue is your horse; Whoever obeys his desires will sell his religion with his intention. If the patience is bitter, then his punishment is sweetness. If delicious food is after hunger, and water is still thirsty, and sleep is better after fatigue, and nicer success after sacrifice. As long as there is life there is hope. The woman's mind in her beauty, the beauty of the man in his mind.

Things actually look pretty good for the Tigers in 2017.
With the 2016 season over, it's time to turn our attention to 2017. There is still recruiting to cover somewhat, but it's always fun to do that "way too early" look at the schedule. Other sites have done the same thing already. I haven't really looked at theirs, yet, but I imagine much of it is done the same way.
Schedule
So, here's a look at the teams we play, their 2016 records, and quick thoughts on those games.
1) Georgia Southern (5-7). After winning the Sun Belt in their first season of FBS and winning their first bowl game in 2015, 2016 was a huge step backward for the Eagles. They had a new coach who attempted to run an option offense for a short amount of time with coaches who had never run that type of offense, and the results were awful. The Co-OCs were fired and they've brought in actual triple option coaches. I'll have more on this game, later. This is the type of game that should always be a win for Auburn (particularly with the opponent breaking in a new offensive staff and a new QB), but the triple option can always be a devilishly tough thing to play against if you don't see it much.
2) Clemson (13-1 At the moment). Auburn will either be facing the runner-up or the national champion and the game will be at their place. They'll also be replacing their QB most likely and will have other offensive weapons to replace. Their defense likely won't miss a beat, but it's to be hoped that Auburn's doesn't, either, and that could help the Auburn Tigers get out to a great start to 2017. Given that it's at their place, this is a game I may pencil in as a loss, but with what happened this year and how I suspect Auburn will look on offense next year in this game (no musical QBs), I think it's very winnable.
3) Mercer Bears (FCS, 6-5). Auburn will win this easily and it provides a nice rest between Clemson and the first trip to Columbia, Missouri.
4) Missouri Tigers (4-8). I don't know what to think about Mizzou, yet. They're going to want revenge for the 2013 SEC title game, but I don't know if their team is quite ready to handle things in Year 2 of the Barry Odom era. They did finish the season with two home wins against Vanderbilt and Arkansas, so it could be a tougher game than that 4-8 record shows. Especially since it's at home. We'll know much more about them after their games against South Carolina and Purdue in the early part of the season.
5) Mississippi State Bulldogs (6-7). Mississippi State struggled during 2016 but still made a bowl game and finished the year off with a shellacking of Ole Miss in the Egg Bowl. That was an Ole Miss without Chad Kelly and that was starting a true freshman with only 1-2 games under his belt, though. Nick Fitzgerald is a scary good QB who could get the Bulldogs back on track in 2017 and back to where Dan Mullen has had them the last few seasons: maybe not a true SEC West competitor, but someone who can ruin your season and have a decent to good year themselves. Thankfully, this one is at home.
6) Ole Miss Rebels (5-7). We get the Mississippi schools at home in back-to-back weeks next year. That should be interesting. Shea Patterson will have much more time in Hugh Freeze's system and if the Rebels can find a running game (which has been the story of their last few seasons), they could once again be very dangerous. Again, thankfully, this one is at home.
7) LSU Tigers (7-4). This game begins Auburn's 3-game road stretch. We don't know what LSU's offense will look like under Matt Canada, but we know they're not going to drop off at the running back slot even with Fournette gone. Guice gained a ton of yards on Auburn in just a very few carries in 2016. They may be relying on a true freshman QB, but at Week 7, he may be ready to roll under the offense and going strong. It's also in Baton Rouge, which has been a penciled in loss since 1999.
8) Arkansas Razorbacks (7-6). I'm glad we get this one in October. OctoBERT is much better than NovemBERT. Bert is going to be on the hot seat in Fayetteville next season I suspect, and you can bet this is going to be a game he REALLY wants. That's particularly true after what happened in the game this season. I'm not real sure what the Razorbacks are going to have coming back because I haven't delved too much into that level of detail just yet, but I still think this is one Auburn should win.
OFF WEEK
9) Texas A&M Aggies (8-4). It's in College Station, so we can just call this one a win, right? Lucky for Auburn, this is a late-season game against the Aggies. This year we faced them during their annual "start the year like world-beaters" stage. Next year we get them in November, where they're typically sliding off. They'll also likely have a freshman QB at the reigns, but it could be a very slippery one whom Auburn really wanted in Kellen Mond.
10) Georgia Bulldogs (8-5). Jacob Eason is going to be a very good quarterback, and by this point next year, he's going to be very experienced. That could spell a lot of trouble for Auburn. If Auburn goes into this game healthy, though, I think it's one the Tigers should win. They're going to be hungry for it, it's in front of the home fans, and Auburn wants and needs revenge. Hopefully, Gus can shake whatever curse has resulted in having his worst offensive performances against the Bulldogs every year since the Miracle at Jordan-Hare.
11) Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks (4-8). This is a win. We all know it. If it's not, then Gus is gone.
12) Alabama (14-0 at the moment). It's in Auburn, so there's that. This is a game that I just don't know about. It will depend on how Sark changes things with play calling, whether Hurts develops as a down-field passer. Whether Sark can play to his advantages like Kiffin did, if Auburn's offense is healthy and rolling like it hasn't been able to be for the last two Iron Bowls, and plenty of other factors. Could Auburn win? Absolutely, they could. There are still a lot of questions surrounding what Alabama will look like in 2017, though.
Analysis
So, with that schedule, what type of record could Auburn end 2017 with?
Best case scenario (offense clicks, stays healthy, etc), it could be a championship run. Worst case, to me, is a year just like this season or 2015. There are possible losses to teams like Ole Miss, Mississippi State, or Texas A&M, but as long as the team stays healthy, I think there's a ton of potential to look like Auburn at their 2016 best throughout the year. The offense could be much stronger, and the defense could be just as strong. With that, it's not hard to believe 10-11+ wins are on the table.
Other than that 3-game road trip (which is broken up by an off week), the way the schedule is laid out works in Auburn's favor. It's set up for a good run.
If things go wrong, though, as they have the last two years, then 6-6 or worse is out there. Things going wrong include injuries, play-calling funks, red-zone struggles, etc.
I think 2017 will be a good year. I definitely think it's a make-or-break year for Gus Malzahn. I hate the "hot seat" moniker in this case, but it's definitely the truth. 2017 is Year 5. Yes, there have been issues that led to the 2015 &16 struggles, but those were issues (QBs in particular) that the coach should have been better prepared for.
I said at the beginning of 2016 that 8-4 with a win over LSU, Georgia, or Alabama was necessary to last until 2017. That's exactly what happened. I don't think Gus can survive 8-4 in 2017 if that includes losses to Georgia and Alabama again. LSU is a bit more of a toss-up because it's in Baton Rouge and that's almost always a guaranteed loss. Georgia and Alabama, though, are the key.
This is only the beginning of what we'll do looking forward to next year. It was a basic down-and-dirty without much real analysis. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the schedule in the comments!
